Can students order directly from GlobaLens?
Students can download electronic versions of teaching materials and/or order hard copies from GlobaLens directly. However, additional distribution or reproduction without permission is a violation of U.S. Copyright Law and is strictly prohibited. Students cannot access Teaching Notes, and GlobaLens requests that Registered Educators refrain from allowing students to access these materials. Back to top
What are the guidelines for distributing and reproducing materials?
The distribution of electronic copies or the reproduction and printing of master/electronic copies beyond the quantity of permission copies ordered is a violation of U.S. Copyright Law and is strictly prohibited.
How do I download and use my materials?
Electronic versions of our products are in PDF (Portable Document Format) and should be viewed with Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can download Adobe Reader free at www.adobe.com. PDF files of cases and other course materials are available in My Purchases for six months from the date of purchase. Occasionally, users experience difficulties viewing Adobe PDF files with Adobe Acrobat Reader and/or Internet Explorer. Microsoft & Adobe have documented these problems, and more information is available at their websites. In order to compensate for this problem, we recommend using Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher with Adobe 6 or higher.
However, for users who do not want to or cannot upgrade, we recommend the following options to access your PDF files:
OPTION 1:
-
Right click on the file name.
-
Choose "Save As" from the popup menu In the "Save As" dialog box, select a location on your hard drive to save the file
-
Click Save
-
In the Download Complete dialog box, click Open to view your file in Adobe Acrobat Reader, or go to the saved location to open the file.
Make Adobe Reader a helper application. If you are using Internet Explorer or AOL, the problem may be caused by a configuration setting between your browser and Acrobat Reader. Below are instructions to enable your browser to use Acrobat Reader as a helper application, which should alleviate the problem:
OPTION 2:
-
Exit from Internet Explorer or AOL.
-
Start Adobe Acrobat Reader.
-
Go to Edit > Preferences > Options (Acrobat 5.0 and6.0) or to Edit > Preferences >Internet, for Acrobat 7.0.
-
Uncheck or deselect the "Display PDF in Browser option" and Click Ok.
-
Exit from Acrobat. (Acrobat 7.0 & 8.0 may require a restart of your system)
-
Restart Internet Explorer or AOL.
Note: The next time you click on a link to a PDF file in Internet Explorer or AOL, a dialog box will prompt you to specify what to do with the file. If you select "Open this file from its current location," the browser will open the PDF file in a new Acrobat window. If you select "Save this file to disk," the browser will save the PDF file to your hard drive, a location from which you can open it later.
When I purchase a copyright license, what did I buy?
The purchase of one PDF file and one copyright permission means that you have purchased the right to use and print the material for your individual use only.
If you intend to make copies of the materials to distribute to others, including students or staff, you must purchase additional copyright permissions.
For example, if you purchase one PDF file and one copyright permission, and then decide to use the materials in a course you teach, it is your responsibility to purchase additional copyright permissions for each copy you intend to make -- normally one per student taking the class.
The distribution of electronic copies or the reproduction and printing of master/electronic copies beyond the quantity of permission copies ordered is a violation of U.S. Copyright Law and is strictly prohibited.
How do I buy additional copyright permissions and hard copies of the materials?
You may request additional copyright permissions online. Your Profile section on GlobaLens gives you a flexible online area for planning and delivering course material. Once you purchase materials they are automatically added to the My Downloads page. You may order additional copyright permissions for them, and indicate the quantity needed for your course, from the My Order History page. Alternatively, you may print a faxable permission form or call our Customer Service Department at 734.615.9553. You may also email permissions@globalens.com.
The quickest (and most economical) method to obtain hard copies for your students is to request permission from GlobaLens to copy the material yourself. This option saves you time since you can then have copies produced locally at your campus bookstore, university copy service, or nearby copy shop. (Remember: It is your responsibility to purchase additional copyright permissions for each copy you intend to make.) You may order the same number of hard copies via GlobaLens and we will ship the hard copies from our local copying service in Ann Arbor, Michigan. But securing permission to make copies yourself ensures you a reduced price and no shipping charges or delays that may be possible if ordering hard copies via GlobaLens.
Follow these steps to place an online order for permissions:
-
Add desired items to your cart.
-
Enter the total number of permissions and pdf's desired.
Note: Orders for copyright permissions refer to copies that you will produce yourself. You will not be shipped a hardcopy of the material or receive an electronic download (i.e., a master copy). Back to top
GlobaLens has a broad selection of high-quality, cutting-edge teaching materials, including case studies with teaching notes, mini-cases, conceptual notes, exercises, simulations, and syllabi. You can search our catalog [link to Search page] for these products. You can search our products in a variety of ways including by Product Type, Core Business Discipline, Focus Area, Partner, and Author.
Case studies:
-
Foster profound discussion and debate in the classroom, without leading students to an apparent solution.
-
Follow the traditional case study structure, highlighting a protagonist that must come to a decision concerning her or his organization.
-
Normally are 10-15 pages in length, with an accompanying teaching note for easy adoption. Some cases may also have accompanying videos.
Mini-cases:
-
1-3 pages in length, offering more flexibility than a full-length case.
-
May be used independently or in combination with other teaching materials. Many faculty members choose to use several mini-cases in one class session, rather than one full-length case.
Conceptual notes:
-
Informational and does not necessarily provoke discussion.
-
Similar to a chapter from a textbook or an informative article describing a specific business concept.
-
Complement cases by providing students background information that enriches the case discussion.
Simulations: GlobaLens offers two types of simulation products: the full- or multiple-day simulation and the computer simulation.
-
Leadership Crisis Challenge: Our LCC products are full- or multiple-day simulations that train students to think critically in real-time by role-playing specific parts within an urgent business crisis. LCC teaching materials take the case discussion to a higher, more complex level by integrating time-release documents and interactive elements that create a dynamic classroom experience.
-
Computer Simulations: GlobaLens computer simulations can be used for a single class session and combined with a written version of the case.

What is a business case study?
A business case illustrates a business or policy situation and is designed to be solved through classroom discussion. The case study provides information to stimulate discussion and debate concerning possible outcomes and does not have an obvious solution or a "right answer."
Each case study has one central decision point or dilemma, which is clearly apparent within the first page to page and a half. The protagonist has to make a decision within a given time frame. The protagonist often has incomplete or conflicting information, bringing pressures and biases to the decision.
Case studies are often used in business schools to simulate real-life scenarios, helping students develop the leadership, analytic, and decision-making skills critical in the real world.
Our case studies are normally 10-15 pages in length, with an accompanying teaching note for easy adoption. Some cases may also have accompanying videos.
What is the Case Teaching Method?
The Case Teaching Method helps educators to challenge their students to think critically, take stances, and defend their stances with information from the case and personal experience. In the Case Teaching Method, educators should only be facilitators, with minimal involvement in solving the case. In an ideal case discussion, students will take the stage, debating the decision point with each other and with the professor. Educators should be aware that there is no correct way to solve a case--the learning takes place in the collaborative discussion process.
How do I write a case study?
Writing a case study involves the collaboration of a variety of different stakeholders, generally including a featured organization, a professor, and a case writer. High-quality research and writing is often more time-consuming than many people believe, so our case writing services are available on a contract basis to manage the entire process from start to finish and deliver a superior quality product.
A case study follows a standard structure[link to Teaching Support]:
-
Introduction of a protagonist and his or her decision point, or the situation for which the protagonist must come to a decision concerning his/her organization. (Present tense)
-
Relevant background information on organization, industry, competitors, etc, that will help students take a stance on the decision point. (Past tense)
-
Return to the protagonist's situation, the alternatives available, and the consequences involved. (Present tense)
Successful case studies usually begin by defining the business principle and teaching objectives that an instructor seeks to illustrate through the narrative. Then, the specific decision point should be identified. The case narrative may then be structured around the teaching objectives and the decision point.
It is imperative for a case study to be clear, concise, and objective. It should not be used as a marketing tool for the organization featured in the case, though biases may be exhibited by a character such as the protagonist. All information should be from reliable, authoritative sources, cited in MLA style in the endnotes of the case. Otherwise, the case study may not be publishable.
Most case studies are written in past tense, in order to stay relevant after publication. Download our free conceptual note How to Write a Business Case [PDF link] for more information or submit your business case study [Link to Submit Materials] for review.

Compliance Policy for Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards
Purpose
Departments and business units throughout the William Davidson Institute (WDI) have entered into merchant contracts with the Payment Card Industry (PCI) as part of their business transaction service sets. Because of rapidly evolving financial crimes and cyber-related security challenges, the payment industry, including American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB, MasterCard Worldwide, and Visa International, has published specific "PCI Data Security Standards" in an effort to better secure payment account data in a globally consistent manner. All merchant contract holders are required to adopt and implement tools, practices, and policies to comply with these standards. Failure to comply may result in financial penalties or security breaches.
This policy helps ensure PCI compliance requirements are met throughout all William Davidson Institute (WDI) business units and departments. It also provides WDI procedures for use, reporting requirements of contracted payment card services, and the process for obtaining and maintaining merchant contracts.
Policy Definitions
Merchant: Any office, unit, department, or organization at the William Davidson Institute (WDI) that accepts credit cards as a form of payment for goods and/or services.
Merchant Level: PCI security standards provide four different levels of compliance activities that must be completed annually. These levels, (merchant levels 1–4) are based on the transaction volumes of a merchant. Essentially, merchants with the most transactions have the most compliance work to perform to stay in compliance. The specific compliance requirements for each merchant level can be found below:
Merchant Levels and Compliance Validation Requirements Defined All merchants will fall into one of the four merchant levels based on transaction volume over a 12-month period. Transaction volume is based on the aggregate number of transactions. In cases where a merchant has more than one Merchant ID, the aggregate volume of all transactions stored, processed or transmitted by the merchant is used determine the validation level. In addition to adhering to the PCI DSS, compliance validation is required for Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 merchants, and may be required for Level 4 merchants. The PCI DSS requires that all merchants with externally-facing IP addresses perform quarterly external network scans to achieve compliance. Acquirers may require submission of the quarterly scan reports and/or questionnaires by level 4 merchants. Any merchant that has suffered a breach that resulted in an account data compromise may be escalated to a higher validation level.
